As a barber, my tools aren’t just equipment—they’re an extension of my craft. I’m always looking for gear that makes cutting easier, cleaner, and more efficient. With clipper prices going up and dozens of new brands entering the market, it can be tough to know what’s worth your money.

Recently, I had the chance to test out Maxgroom, a newer company making waves with their new release of clippers with the new and improved Maglev motor technology. They sent me their clipper and trimmer combo, and after a week of real shop use, here’s my honest take.

Who is MaxGroom?

Maxgroom is a new company with a team of former engineers and product managers who left the corporate world to create tools for professionals. Their biggest innovation is the new Magnetic Levitation motor. Now, I’m not an expert on the mechanics of clippers, but the MagLev system is a design that provides consistent power, less heat, and fewer stability issues.

On paper, that sounds impressive. But how do they hold up behind the chair? Let’s break it down.

Testing the Clippers

1. Bulk Removal – 6/10

  • Straight hair: handled smoothly, around 8/10.
  • Curly/coarse hair: struggled, closer to 4/10.
  • Average score: 6/10.

The motor didn’t lag, but the performance dipped with curlier textures.

2. Fades – 7/10

  • Clean fades work well with straight hair, but I had to go over each section multiple times.
  • The fade lever is oversized and awkward, which made my thumb sore after extended use.

3. Detail & Line Work – 5/10

  • Trimmers worked decently out of the box on straight and fine hair.
  • Trimmers are not zero gapped
  • Struggled with thick, coarse hair — lacked the sharpness and power I’d want as a pro.

4. Heat & Comfort – 8/10

  • Blades stayed cool throughout the day.
  • No tugging or pulling reported by clients.

5. Battery Life – 10/10

  • Huge highlight.
  • Came fully charged, uses USB-C (big plus).
  • Lasted through a full day of cutting without needing a charge.
  • The power monitor was super handy.

Final Verdict

For At-Home Users (9/10):

These clippers are perfect for DIY haircuts, college students, or dads upgrading from old machines. Affordable, safe on skin, lightweight, and packed with accessories! It’s an unbeatable starter kit.

For Professionals (5/10):

If you cut a wide range of textures daily, these fall short in versatility. The fade lever design and weaker trimmers limit them for heavy shop use. I wouldn’t put them in my main rotation, but they could serve as a lightweight backup.

Bottom line: If you’re cutting at home, Maxgroom is a great value. If you’re a working barber, they’re not replacing your main clippers anytime soon. Given that this company is only two years old, I look forward to seeing how it improves.
