When I created my Target product guide, it performed really well. Readers appreciated having a curated list of clean and affordable products they could trust. Naturally, Walmart felt like the next place to explore — especially since it’s known for being budget-friendly.
As a barber stylist, I talk to people every day about their hair habits. And one thing comes up constantly:
“Yeaaaaa, I stilll shampoo every day.”
Or every other day. Or every time they shower.
Now, I’m not here to tell you to stop shampooing daily. But if you are washing your hair every single day, I want you to at least be aware of the ingredients you’re putting on your scalp. Your scalp is skin. It absorbs. And daily use of products with questionable ingredients can add up over time.
I’m not a doctor, and I’m not here to make health claims. But if an ingredient is questionable, and you’re using it every day, why risk it?
That’s why I create these guides.
To help you find the cleanest, most affordable options at the places you already shop.
Here’s what I found on the shelves of Walmart.

Table of Contents
What I Found While Searching Walmart’s Hair Care Section
I spent time browsing the Walmart website and checking out their shelves in person, hoping to find solid clean options that met both standards:
✔️ Clean ingredients
✔️ Affordable price point
But honestly?
I didn’t like what I saw.
Walmart has tons of hair products, but very few meet a clean standard. Walmart prioritizes value, which usually means lower prices, heavy discounts, and bulk deals. But cheaper often comes at the cost of cleaner formulations.
Many popular brands like Head & Shoulders, Suave, Old Spice & Axe contain ingredients that I personally recommend avoiding if you’re trying to protect your scalp and hair long-term.
If clean hair care matters to you, I’d stay far, far away from those.
The One Clean Brand That Did Stand Out: Native

Surprisingly, the only brand at Walmart that consistently checked the clean-ingredient boxes was Native.
Native has gained a good reputation for transparency:
- Ingredients are clearly listed
- Easy to scan
- No hidden red-flag chemicals
Their price point is also reasonable, making them one of the only clean and affordable options you’ll consistently find on Walmart shelves.
If you’re shopping clean at Walmart, Native is basically the clear winner.
Top Clean & Affordable Men’s Hair Care Finds
The products listed below got the highest ratings with the Yuka App. More items will be added as we find them.

Shampoos
Native – Curl Care Shampoo
OGX – Renewing + Argan Oil of Morocco Moisturizing
Conditioners
SheaMoisture – Men Conditioner Coconut Oil & Maca Root
Native – Clean Conditioner, Citrus & Herbal
Styling Products
Unfortunately, my search for high-quality men’s styling products has not been successful at Walmart. Therefore, I recommend that you avoid purchasing Walmart styling products, except for their beard oils and balms, which have received positive ratings and reviews. However, i would personally recommend YEAR 01, 02 & 05 as better, cleaner alternatives if you are looking for beard balms and oils.
How to Quickly Check If a Product Is Clean
If you want to vet products yourself (and I recommend you do), here are two of the best apps for checking ingredients on the spot:
1. Yuka
You simply scan the barcode, and it breaks down:
- Ingredient safety
- Potential irritants
- Recent research on questionable chemicals
I found the Yuka app to be the easiest to use while in the store. The app even logs your scans so you can go back and view them later. My only concern with the app is that it categorizes “fragrance” as low-risk. Yuka mentions that the fragrance has some potential allergens and could cause irritation, so if you have sensitive skin, you may want to avoid it. Overall, I had a great experience using Yuka and highly recommend trying it next time you’re in the store.
If you get the paid version, you can search products without scanning. (like 12$ a year)

2. EWG (Environmental Working Group)
EWG’s database has been around for years and provides ingredient-safety scores.
Great for shoppers who want a quick “Yes/No” read on a product.
These apps take the guesswork out of shopping—especially in stores like Walmart where clean options are limited.
Products I would stay away from
When it comes to clean ingredients, I recommend staying away from all 2-in-1 products. I couldn’t find a clean option. I don’t recommend using them anyway, as shampoo and conditioner have two different functions. This only further supports my reasoning for avoiding them.
The men’s section of hair care products needs improvement. While I understand the appeal of convenience, it’s important to consider the cost of using harsh ingredients. I recommend steering clear of the men’s section and exploring the women’s section instead. There are more options available for different hair types. Trust me, it’s worth taking the extra few minutes to find a better choice.

So… Should You Shop for Clean Hair Care at Walmart?
Here’s my honest take:
If you’re on a strict budget and want something cleaner than the typical drugstore brands, Native is your best option at Walmart.
If you want more variety, cleaner formulas, or brands that truly prioritize good ingredients… you’ll probably need to shop elsewhere.
Walmart is unbeatable for affordability.
But for clean, high-quality hair care?
It’s not the ideal place.
If I discover other clean options at Walmart, I’ll update this guide.
Final Thoughts
Clean hair care doesn’t have to be expensive, but it does require paying attention to ingredients. Use the Yuka or EWG apps, scan products while you shop, and choose those that align with your health and values.
I know not everyone has the budget for $30–$60 salon shampoos. That’s why these guides exist —to help you find the best options for your price range.
For Walmart, the winner is clear: Native.
For more clean options, you may need to look beyond Walmart.
Next up…
Whole Foods.
Will their products be clean? Absolutely.
But will they be affordable?
Hmm… let’s find out.
