Aftershave Shouldn’t Hurt – Try Out This Natural Alternative

Last Updated on June 19, 2023 by David Thomas

You’re getting a nice haircut and the barber is ready to finish up. He makes his last adjustments and is almost done. He picks the good ol’ aftershave bottle, then sprays on.

Simply painful.

We have all seen memes of clients jumping out of chairs when their barbers use alcohol-based aftershaves. It’s only funny because it’s true and relatable. Not only does this hurt, but this is actually terrible for the skin.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like putting my clients through that.

Natural Alternative

So today I’ll be sharing how to make a natural and soothing alternative to traditional aftershave. I’ve been using this mixture for over five years now with no complaints, breakouts or jumping out of the chair.

The key ingredient in this natural remedy is Witch-Hazel.

Witch-Hazel has been shown to relieve inflammation, reduce skin irritation, fight breakouts, and even help with skin conditions like Psoriasis

The next ingredient is the antioxidant-rich Aloe Vera.

It’s rich in micronutrients like Vitamin C and Vitamin E. It’s super moisturizing, which softens the skin. Adding to that, it also fights infections and acne.

Now, Witch-Hazel has a strong floral scent, so I like to add my favorite combination of essential oils to help with the smell. The essential oils that I use the most are Lavender, Tea-tree, and Peppermint. They all have their own sets of benefits as well.

I mix all of this with some vegetable glycerin to hold it all together which also has moisturizing benefits.

Make sure you shake well before you use the mixture. It can be applied just like traditional aftershave. Sometimes the solution might separate but it’s totally fine to use again.

Recipe:

8 oz / 236ml:

Witch hazel – 5.5 oz/ 165ml

Aloe Vera – 2 oz / 59ml

Essential Oils – 0.4 oz / 11 ml

Vegetable Glycerin – 1 teaspoon

Shelf life – 3 weeks

Good Practices

Now I know what you’re thinking, who has the time or resources to make all this? Don’t worry, I have some alternative ideas as well.

Make sure to keep your clippers:

  • Regularly Cleaned
  • Regularly Sharpened
  • Regularly Oiled

If your clippers are adjusted correctly, there is less friction on the skin.

Quick tip: Always try the clippers on the soft part of your skin before using on your clients.

Premixed alcohol-free aftershave

Barbers, let’s put an end to burning our clients, and if you’re someone that’s tired of getting burned, feel free to share this with your barber.
